Children’s toys are a natural joy but when certain childish amusements are compared to more grown up issues such as Empire building, land grab, territorial power and control then this destroys any suggestion of innocence and play.

The concept of finding resources and controlling them at any cost is a long part of our history, so sugar might be a possible metaphor. Creatures of nature have always had an inherent need or attraction to light. Even if it means life or death, humans, like moths, are drawn to a flame; it seems to be part of our evolution. This pull of natural life to light and its destructive force fascinates me.

I’m always aware of it in the gardens of Sacy.

Rug, Roof Tiles, Dove Feathers and Neon

“Incubus” was one of those rare works that seemed to make itself and it felt like I was simply helping that process.

I brought two sections of red neon and attached them to the roof of the central beam of the barn attic. I decided to use a rug as a base directly beneath this to allow a playful element (memories came to mind of constructing objects on my mother’s carpet as a child).

I then decided to use some spare roof tiles beneath the dovecote’s entrance to allow a construction process from this rug toward the neon as a suggestion of organic growth toward the neon as a synthetic light source, alluring but menacing.

Because of the nature of the tiles and the emulation of the roof itself this seemed to develop its own form.

While collecting the tiles, I noticed that the doves were continually losing their feathers onto them. I placed the feathers within the interior of the cylindrical construction, with the doves’ flutter above the attic as the only sound.

There came a point where the tiles refused to adhere to the construction (about 4 feet up) which seemed perfect as this allowed visibility into the interior where the dove feathers became blood red from the neon directly above.

There are many private thoughts that came to mind while building this and I feel that this tied in perfectly with the timeless museum that is Sacy, abundant in organic growth both creative and decaying.
